Pitting KN95 mask vs. N95shows several similarities. For instance, KN95 masks and N95 masks are constructed from multiple layers of synthetic material (typically a polypropylene plastic polymer) and are designed to be worn over the nose and mouth. The main distinction lies in how the masks are approved. “In general,” says Sean Kelly, CEO of New Jersey-based PPE of America, “N95 is the U.S. model, and the KN95 is the China model.” Because of this, only N95 masks are recommended for health-care use in the United States, also though KN95 masks have several of the same protecting properties.
N95 masks requirement pass a detailed review and certification method from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which is part of the CDC. Until companies making KN95 masks can seek approval from the FDA for an accident authorization for a foreign certification that meets the 95 percent filtration requirement. The FDA says the manufacturer of KN95 masks must also provide documentation that authentic masks and materials are accurate.
According to Kelly, whose organization was among those hit by Connecticut lawmakers to provide personal protective equipment to frontline workers in the state, certification of KN95 masks incorporate a requirement on “fit testing,” which examines the air inside and outside of the mask, as well as how the mask fits around your face. The N95 masks do not have these conditions to meet their standard. Still, he says, “N95 mask specifications are a bit more valid regarding the pressure reduction in the mask during breathing in, which does the N95 more breathable than most KN95 masks. The N95 masks have similar requirements for breathing out. These requirements,” Kelly says, “make the N95 mask a bit more excellent with the overall breathability for users.”
Keep in understanding that the certifications mentioned above only apply to the country where the standards and laws were created, not where the masks are made. Most N95 masks are still manufactured in China. Likewise, the CDC has authorized the use of KN95 masks as a suitable option to N95 masks for its response to Covid-19. Therefore, when it comes to KN95 masks vs. N95, the former wins slimly.
